To plant or not to plant that is the question? 🌳🚧
At Purple Penguin, we believe that if we achieve net-zero emissions while neglecting human rights and biodiversity development, then we have only placed a band-aid over the problem.
With help from our friends at Project Ark, our Pebble & Friends Gamer Pass NFT was minted on Polygon’s proof-of-stake chain, minimizing emissions over proof-of-work chains like Ethereum. In addition to minting our NFTs, Project Ark calculated our emissions and facilitated a carbon credit purchase through Gaia Together in support of their Mangrove restoration project.
This project was chosen because of the mangrove’s fast growth cycle and root systems that form a shield against soil erosion, providing a haven for wildlife.

Purple Penguin is proud to announce our new agroforestry partnership with Treedom!
We’ve arranged for a mix of trees to be planted around the world creating our very own community forest! We will be starting with 100 trees that you will be able to track and even be gifted ownership of through the Treedom digital forest app for participating in community events. The agroforestry forest will support biodiversity, provide work, food & fuel to local communities, and enrich the environmental ecosystems surrounding them.

Treedom is the first platform in the world that allows you to plant a tree from a distance and follow the story of the project online. Since its foundation in 2010 in Florence, more than 3.000.000 trees have been planted in Africa, South America, and Italy. All trees are planted directly by local farmers and bring environmental, social, and financial benefits to their communities. Thanks to its business model, in 2014 Treedom became part of the Certified B Corporations, a network of companies that stand out for high environmental and social performance.
Treedom directly finances agroforestry projects throughout the territory. The philosophy is to realize sustainable ecosystems and allow thousands of farmers to support the initial costs of planting new trees, ensuring food autonomy and income opportunities over time.
Treedom has developed an innovative methodology for the certification and monitoring of trees. Every single tree planted is in fact recorded thanks to geolocation, photographed, and reported on a map within the platform www.treedom.net: this allows to register the trees planted by companies and people and make them visible on the web.
Environmental benefits
The realization of agroforestry systems allows making precise choices in relation to the specific characteristics and needs of each project area. The tree species planted are native or respect the biodiversity of the different territories. The agroforestry practice also integrates the planting of trees in an agricultural system, favoring the virtuous interaction between the different species and sustainable use of resources and land. Finally, all trees absorb CO2 in the course of their growth, naturally generating a benefit for the entire planet.
Social and economic benefits
Treedom finances projects in rural communities in many countries of the world and also carries out projects with a strong social value in Italy. The first step is the training and financing of the communities involved in the projects, obtaining extraordinary results in terms of their own empowerment. The trees and their fruits belong to the farmers, allowing them to diversify and supplement their income and in some cases to launch micro-entrepreneurship initiatives. Financing the planting of new trees with Treedom serves to support the trees’ care in the first years of their life when they are not yet productive in terms of fruit.
Process
1) Choose the tree you like the most
A farmer will plant it for you in his country and will take care of it. Your tree will be photographed, geolocalized, and will have an online page. You will be able to find out about the project to which it will give life, customize it with your message, and if you want, gift it to someone special.
2) Follow its progress
Your tree will grow in one of the nurseries of the projects we carry out in various countries around the world. When it is big enough, it will be handed over to a farmer to be planted and cared for, so that it can grow, absorb CO2 and bear fruit.
3) Improve the air you breathe
As it grows, your tree will absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and will release oxygen, thus improving the quality of the air we all breathe.
