Through our event production companies we have a long history of collaborating with artists and blending audio-visual experiences to create one-of-a-kind parties. Organizing these events taught us 2 things above all else… Without The Art & The Community, there is only an idea.
Keeping this understanding at the forefront of everything we do at Purple Penguin we believe it’s important to share the story of our lead artist and how we met.
An avid NFT collector, our founder Kevin is constantly researching and scrolling twitter searching for talented artists to support or add to his never-ending list of must-have pieces & dream collaborations. Near the end of 2021, Kevin unexpectedly came across an illustration in an “art shill thread” that was somewhere between concert poster and comic art. Immediately he began to look into the artist and purchased 1 of each piece to support them before the light went off… we may have found our artist.
After a brief discussion using a mix of Google Translate & hyperlinked images, the initial concept art for the Vagrant Penguins collection was underway. Bayu Virgiawan is based in Indonesia and doesn’t speak any English which makes this relationship unique and very special as we attempt to change the world together through art.
Bayu is the sole artist behind the Vagrant Penguins artwork, he has also begun work on a companion collection that expands the lore of the Vagrant Penguins and their interstellar journey. Soon you will be able to own these storyboard concept drawings as 1/1 NFTs and limited edition releases that tell the backstory of the Vagrant Penguins with 100% of sales supporting Bayu and his family.
“My name is Bayu Virgiawan, The name of my village is Kiyangkongrejo, it is located in Kutoarjo Regency in Purworejo City. My grandfather and father are farmers, I am the eldest of 4 children, live a simple life in the village, I like music and drawing, I compose my own songs, and during the covid 19 pandemic, I lost my job. Finally I met Kevin and offered me to join the project he made, finally I started my life again with this project, with this penguin I hope it can make me, my wife and children survive, with all my heart I draw this penguin, I hope many people like it.”
“I minted my NFT in October 2021, and I found out about NFT through the internet. I saw a video on YouTube, which discusses NFT and how to mint…then I tried to upload it to HEN and finally we met.”
